Steam Workshop

Browse the Steam Workshop inside Loomscreen Pro, like items for later, and download them with your own Steam account through SteamCMD.

Loomscreen Pro includes a Steam Workshop browser. Public browsing needs no setup. Downloads use your own Steam account and license through Valve's SteamCMD tool.

The Workshop is a Pro feature. Loomscreen is an independent implementation, not affiliated with Wallpaper Engine, and scene compatibility varies by project. See Compatibility.

Browse the Workshop

Open Workshop in the management window. Public browsing does not need SteamCMD, a sign-in or an API key.

  • Search, page through results, and filter by maturity, type, resolution, genre and Miscellaneous tags.
  • Genre choices match any selected genre. Miscellaneous choices must all be present.
  • Maturity starts at Everyone, like the signed-out Workshop page. Turn on the Questionable and Mature chips to include those ratings.
  • Sort names, time windows and search-field options use Steam's own wording. The default sort is Most Popular over one week. You can change it in Workshop settings.
  • Filters still apply inside tag and creator views.

A detail page shows posted and updated dates, rating and comment counts, required items and grouped tags. It links to the item's change notes, comments and collections on Steam. An installed item can be applied directly to a named display.

The browser keeps your query, filters, page and selected item while you switch pages in the management window. This browsing session is not kept across app restarts.

Like items for later

  1. Click the pink heart on a Workshop card, in its context menu or in the detail view.
  2. Turn on Liked in the Workshop filter bar to see everything you liked.
  3. Open details and download when you are ready.

Liking is local. It does not download, subscribe to or apply the item. Pro .lwconfig exports include your likes, but not downloaded wallpaper media.

Set up downloads

When you need to download content, the app guides you through setup. Open Settings → Workshop. A status bar at the top shows the three prerequisites. The Steam connection section lists them step by step and offers auto-configuration.

1. SteamCMD

Downloads run through Valve's command-line tool with your own Steam account. Accounts with a cached login are found and offered automatically.

ButtonWhat it does
Set up SteamCMDOpens a dialog with two choices. Install with Loomscreen shows the download size and destination, then Download and install installs a managed copy. Install with Homebrew shows a Terminal command with a Copy button; run it, then use Locate automatically.
Locate automaticallyFinds an existing install, for example from Homebrew or in /usr/local/bin.
Choose SteamCMD (Change once ready)Lets you point at a binary yourself.

A managed install fetches Valve's package manifest and checks every download against its SHA-256 checksum. It keeps the result only if the code signature and team identifier are Valve's. If any step fails, it rolls back and leaves your previous setup alone. A SteamCMD you choose yourself goes through the same signature and checksum checks on every run.

The ⋯ menu appears only when there is something to undo. Forget the SteamCMD I chose returns to automatic detection. Remove the copy Loomscreen installed deletes the managed copy after you confirm.

2. Steam Web API key (optional)

An API key enables API-backed browsing, creator metadata and preset lists. Public browsing and download-by-link work without it. Get a key at steamcommunity.com/dev/apikey.

  • New keys are stored in your login Keychain.
  • Older file-based keys move to the Keychain when Keychain access succeeds.
  • If Steam rejects a stored key, browsing switches to the public path and shows a notice you can dismiss.

3. Engine assets

Scenes reference shared Wallpaper Engine assets. Loomscreen downloads them once through SteamCMD. You can link or install them, and Loomscreen can check for updates on launch.

Sign in and download

  1. Sign in with your Steam account through the guided flow. Steam Guard and cached accounts are supported.
  2. Download an item. Downloads go to your authorized Steam library.
  3. Subscription sync makes your subscribed items available in the app.

Sessions are kept per account. You can also link local project folders, which Loomscreen reads in place.

One library entry per item

The library keeps one entry per Workshop item.

  • If a scene imported from a local folder is also present as a Steam download, the Steam item takes its place at launch and after the download.
  • Displays, bookmarks and schemes that used the local copy switch to the Steam item. The local folder stays on disk.
  • Downloading such an item yourself first asks Replace the copy in your library?
  • Importing a folder whose Workshop item is already in the library from another folder is refused. Folder imports report how many items they skipped for this reason.

If something goes wrong

The Steam connection section diagnoses the Steam library, SteamCMD and your account. Expand Diagnostics there for individual checks. See Workshop troubleshooting.
